Tell us in a paragraph what is Bravada?
Bravada is an adventure game. It tells us about a young beardless dwarf (which is a shame of course). He decide to take a quest to solve this problem. Games plot is simple, but original and full of comedy. Everything in the game: dwarfs, monsters, items etc. has its own unique funny description. It mixes tactical turn based combat with quick fluid controls. So you don`t need to wait several minutes to make just one turn. Going through the game, players will control a group of units (up to 12 in final chapter). You can add to your team any of 200+ different units (even foes and monsters). Every one of them has their own specialties, and can upgrade and mutate. The main hero, in addition to upgrades, can equip various weapons and other stuff. So the game may look like another casual title but it is pretty deep.
Why the name – Bravada?
Because of the main hero. He is brave (that’s the root of Bravada), vainglorious and dreams about adventures. It is a simple short word that describes perfectly the spirit of the game. Although if you try to Google it you will find an Oldsmobile SUV but no other games we think….
What influenced you to make Bravada as it is?
Well, we always dreamed to make games. Even in our childhood we made and played our own tabletop games. And we love turn-based gameplay of course, but unfortunately there not so many games of this genre today. So we decided to make our own: to do that we had to quit our jobs, but we don’t regret it. Main influence in battle mechanic was a small game called Battle of Tiles. It is pretty simple, so we took battles from it and added our many own ideas. That’s how Bravada was born.
Bravada has a cheeky feel expressed through comedy, what inspired you to take the route of a spoof style comedy?
I`m really glad you can feel that. I think when you dive into development of the game in some moment you are kind of tunned to the spirit of the game. Probably it is something personal and reflects some sides of my nature. We decide to make funny game from the beginning, and spend a lot of time on this, so game has many short jokes in any aspect. Hopes my jokes are funny not only for me, but for players too.
Bravada boasts depth while offering simple gameplay, do you intend to target mobile phones and tablet devices?
Unfortunately many players don`t see that depth, they see Bravada as another F2P iOS, Android title. That’s sad, because it is true PC game in its origin. We think about mobile devices, but any work on it will start after PC, Mac and Linux build will be done. For that moment only thing we did for touchscreens is controls. You can play with mouse only, it’s not so comfortable but you can. In fact even now on Windows Surface, the game feels fine and control are OK due to our efforts in control optimization. So game probably will be on tablets, as for phones I`m not sure, technically it’s possible but we have some doubts about screen size.
The game reminds me of the mobile game Rune Raiders developed by Retro64, did you take inspiration from RR?
Yes I know that game, and no we took nothing from it. In middle of development I eventually saw this game in AppStore and immediately bought and test it. I believe we and Retro64 wereboth inspired by an older title - Battle of Tiles.
You have released a demo and are catering to all three Windows, Mac and Linux. Where is the game in development process at the moment? What are you next steps?
Right now we are trying to let players to know about our game. This is a hard task, especially when you work on clean enthusiasm with practically zero budget. At the same time we keep working on game content, improvements, and add some features. We are trying to make an interesting, innovating and polished high quality game. For the moment I think more than 80% is done. And we hope to release Bravada this Fall.
Development has already taken a lot of time and we have to feed our families. So we’ve start a preorder on our page. If you don`t mind I`ll share a link. Although we are trying get to Steam through the Greenlight as well. This is a big deal and a lot of votes "Yes" is needed. So if somebody likes our game you can help us here.
With the leveling system you have characters gaining xp and leveling to a split system tree. How many classes can the units level into?
We have several trees of units: dwarfs, slimes, plants, reptiles, armored, birds, hogs/orcs. Every tree tends to some classes, starts from one or two species and spreads wider with levels. Formally we have classes: close combats fighters, ranged units, magic units, healers and several support/buffers. But the system is not strict, so inside one class you will find some variations.
We look forward to seeing how Bravada develops; do you have anything you want to share?
In a few days we will update demo version: it has countless changes and upgrades, like a new role-playing system for main hero, shops where you can spend your coins, improved graphics, new story videos, improved first levels etc. Although players who preorder beta-test will have access to 2nd chapter right after the new demo release.
Sorry for my poor English, as it is not my native language. That’s why I’m talking like a barbarian, I swear. Thank you very much for interesting questions! Good games to you and your readers!
