The Battleground of the Gods just got a little more magical as the Hierophants at HiRez invoke the Egyptian Goddess of Magic, Isis to lend her protective presence to the their free-to-play third person MOBA, SMITE! Just as she serves as a friend and maternal guide to mortal princes and paupers, she’ll now be lending those attributes to you on the battlefield!
Isis comes equipped to fill the role of a Support Mage, or maybe she’s a Mage Support… Whichever word comes first; she’s got what it takes to fill that niche perfectly. Want to deal damage? She can do it! Want to demonstrate your amazing utility in a team fight? She’s got the goods! Want to look like you just killed an endangered bird of prey to show how boss you are? Say no more, she already did it for you!
If you decide to spend those points to unlock her you’ll get a god with an amazingly versatile set of abilities that anyone who likes the mage style of play will fit right into. Her passive makes her a joy to be around and one of the most valuable passives if you’re a fan of the assault or arena game modes!
Isis has the ability to really bring the pain on her opponents while at the same time being able to dump several varieties of crowd control onto her opponents. Her ultimate really allows her to control space for an incredible amount of time if she desires, or to provide significant burst healing for her and her allies.
Her basic attacks are quite different from other mages in that they deal magical damage and scale with magical power and have a combo mechanic like Similar to Ne Zha. On top of that, her abilities all have short cooldown timers allowing her to stay active in engagements when others would have to wade more carefully. Top all that off with the mobility she gets when she makes use of those wings and you have a goddess that can exploit almost any situation.
Even with such an impressive set of strengths, she’ll still drop like a rock if her positioning isn’t top notch due to how squishy she is. Isis is not Aphrodite or Hel, so she’s not going to be able to sustain like they can, her abilities are also on par with Anubis when it comes to reliance on landing sometimes difficult Skill Shots.
If she misses the stun, or her opponent jukes away from the silence or if she gets too excited in the heat of battle and whiffs a few of her Wing Gusts and she can find herself in a position she just can’t recover from.
This is a quick overview of her abilities, if you’d like a complete rundown on her skill prioritization and item builds, be sure to check the embedded video!
Passive - Funeral Rights: Her passive comes in two parts, firstly, Isis gives off an Aura within 30 feet from her location which gives all friendly gods a boost to their HP5 and MP5, for every player death she witnesses these bonuses increase up to a maximum of 10 stacks. I guess you can only see so many people die before you become more callous towards it, eh?
Secondly, her basic attacks deal Magical Damage rather than Physical and scale by 25% of her Magical Power! She also attacks in a rather slow 3 hit combo, the first two attacks dealing damage as normal but the third deals additional damage on top of becoming an AoE!
First Ability - Wing Gust: Didn’t think those wings on her were just for show did you? No, they’re used for her primary source of damage! When she flaps her wings she gains a temporary movement speed buff and can move backwards without suffering a movement penalty for the duration. In addition to increased mobility she can also fire of 4 gusts in a line attack dealing Magical Damage.
Second Ability - Spirit Ball: Aptly named, this ability sends an orb of light in the direction it is cast, Isis can detonate this ability herself at any point before it reaches its maximum range by activating the ability again, stunning and dealing Magical Damage to any in its radius. If it reaches max range and detonates on it’s own it deals 1.5x more damage and stuns a half second longer.
Third Ability - Dispel Magic: This ability is truly multidimensional and has four great effects. Not only does it silence AND slow the enemies hit by it, Dispel Magic also chisels off their magical protections and applies those protections to all nearby allies that are within range of Isis’ passive!
Ultimate Ability - Circle of Protection: There is no better way to plant your flag and claim territory than with Isis’ unique ultimate! Your allies will be glad to have you around in team fights because they will take 30% less damage while they are in range. The damage that they do take only beefs up the end result – when Isis activates her staff again the area explodes dealing magical damage to enemies and healing your allies! But that’s not all if you wait until it is fully charged to detonate a multiplier kicks in and increases the damage and healing done.
The Guide to Playing Isis
Spreading Your Wings: As with all new gods, Isis has just been released and it will be months before she’s more thoroughly explored and that is always an exciting process for anyone adventurous enough to really commit to a new god! As it stands, I can’t think of a more balanced god to be released as of late. Isis emerged onto the scene and just fit incredibly well. Her kit allows her to have a rather diverse play style depending on how you manage your item build, and what skills you decide to prioritize. But the amount of control you have over each of her abilities is truly astounding!
The first step to playing Isis is deciding on how you want to play her, she is a mage and a support, so pick your role and then decide on the lane you want. She functions well in any lane but she really shines in middle or right lane. In middle, it’s easier to get the stacks on your passive as you only have to worry about one opposing player rather than two. Seeing as how your passive functions like a snowball item such as Heartseeker or Doom Orb, dying is a good way to reduce your effectiveness in team fights later on. If you decide to run her in a side lane, take her to the right lane where you can either invade your opponents to try to steal their buff, or get the Cooldown Reduction buff as its absolutely amazing on Isis.
Early on with Isis it’s critical that you mind your positioning at all times. She is very squishy and her kit can make you feel more adaptable than you really are. With a stun, a silence and a movement speed steroid that well let you retreat while attacking, you can easily find yourself in a situation she’s too squishy to get out of. Relax on the aggression until you have that wonderful ultimate of hers and save yourself an early and easily preventable death or two. That seems like its standard advice for any god right? Well, it is, but its doubly important with Isis. Her passive when stacked is rather significant, and that delicious 20 HP/MP5 is lost on death. So in the early game, don’t be afraid to settle for an assist.
In the mid game, Isis can be a terrifying force if she gets a chance to roam, with a cooldown reduction item your wing gust will be on a 9 second cooldown, (7.9 seconds with the Cooldown Reduction Buff as well) so you can use it to quickly move from one lane to the next. Initiate the gank with your Spirit Bomb to get the stun, followed up with Dispel magic to reduce their magical protection by 30% (if you maxed it early) and immediately detonating your ultimate, Circle of Protection for an easy kill.
She’s also incredibly effective at pushing towers when you’ve put a few points into her ultimate as it charges even when minions are taking damage, not only that but no opponent in their right might is interested in standing in it while its down.
In the late game, Isis rivals Ymir in her ability to control her opponents, a painfully long silence, an AoE stun and an ultimate that shields and heals allies or does massive damage to your opponents. Your place as Isis is right in the middle of your team, remain careful and try to stay out of harms reach as you really don’t want to be losing the stacks on your passive that you’ve accumulated. Managing your silence is one of the most important skills to master in late game team fights as you can easily save on of your carries or prevent that Freya from taking to the skies.
