With Team Solo Mid and CLG standing down due to already being qualified for the World Championship, the competition at MLG went down to Dignitas and Curse NA, who went to the finals. The picks, however, were completely confusing and seemed to be random - Varus, Jayce, Lux, Viktor, and Teemo, among many. And it quickly explained itself as both teams went to mid and began to duke it out. They were playing an All Random All Mid against one another. It was already planned out to be done ahead of time.
There was a huge division as people struggled with their feelings. Why an ARAM in a tournament? Was it just trolling? Was it lack of professionalism, or just two teams having fun for viewers and fans? I thought it was pretty funny, and I'd be talking about it for a while. But then something else happened - MLG was played just for the money, which apparently Dignitas and Curse agreed to split ahead of time. Citing that, MLG has disqualified both teams, claiming a breach of the rules.
MLG regrets to announce that we will not be awarding 1st or 2nd Place finishes for the Summer Championship League of Legends Event. We have determined that there was collusion between the two final teams, Curse NA and Team Dignitas. This is in clear violation of both the letter and spirit of MLG’s Official Pro Circuit Conduct Rules: “competitors may not intentionally Forfeit a Game or conspire to manipulate Rankings or Brackets.” As such, both teams have been disqualified, and no placements or prize money will be awarded.
Riot has agreed with this decision and, in accordance with their Season 2 rules on Unsportsmanlike Conduct, will not be awarding Circuit points to either team.
The 3rd and 4th Place teams will receive the prize money and Circuit Points they have earned, and all other results stand. No 1st or 2nd Place will be awarded for this event.
Quoted from the rules:
1. Competitors may not intentionally Forfeit a Game or conspire to manipulate Rankings or Brackets.
So, they have legal grounding, and a decent point. The game was not forfeited and no team took an obvious dive, but they did skirt the rules to goof around. Lee Chen, who works for MLG, made this Twitter statement-
To be clear here folks, the Collusion had nothing to do with the ARAM. CRS/DIG conspired to split prize money.
If they lost out on the Circut points and prize money, then who does get them? Adam Apicella of MLG has elaborated:
MLG will award the full prize money ($40,000) to teams ranked 3, 4, 5, 6.
So, was it about their splitting the prize money? I'm not so sure - Dignitas made several very bad plays through the latter game, most notably lots of getting caught out of position. It's looking more and more like they threw the game. RedBeard has made this statement:
Just to be crystal clear, MLG’s decision here has nothing to do with ARAM. Both Curse and Dignitas admitted to and apologized for colluding prior to the finals to throw the match.
They decided who would win prior to the match - it's not about their strategy during the game or what they are doing with the money afterwards, it's about respect for the game, the sport, the other teams, and the fans.
We are not trying to get out of paying prize money. It is being distributed to the other top teams.
So, to recap - MLG has DQ'd both teams and handed the money down to TSM Evo, Dynamic, Legion, and mME, citing their conspiracy to split winnings and let Curse take the win. The collusion was done in public with several witnesses, and they did not deny the allegation. Honestly, I can't blame MLG or Riot for punishing Dignitas who - if you ignore the 'for fun' aspect of the deal - effectively took a dive for an under-the-table chunk of money, and Curse for agreeing to it.
We will keep you updated as it develops.
