Generally, new players to Dota 2 get confused about the hero selection. Which hero is apt to play for beginners? What skill set should you choose? It consumes a considerable amount of time and often leads to chaotic situations that may result in a bad game. Today, we take a step forward in understanding the enhanced mechanics of the game - hero selection and their skill set.
The hero pool in DOTA 2 is numerically vast to deal with. The total number of heroes in DotA sums up to 108, out of which a few are available and a few are yet to come into the pool of Dota 2. Picking the perfect hero is essentially a tough job for beginners. The selection of a hero without proper utilization of his abilities can be hazardous to you and your team. Wrong selection will bear an instant advantage to your opponents. In an attempt to avoid such chaotic situation and embarassment, we have chosen 4 simple heroes for our beginner friends to start with.
Tidehunter, also known as Leviathan, is our first preference for you folks. The undersea skirmisher is one of the easiest hero available and can be played fluently. Tide can undertake many roles assigned to him whether it is the role of a support or of an initiator/ganker. The brighter side of this character can be its strength attribute. He derives much hit points since the very start and is difficult to kill due to his only passive skill that blocks most of the physical damage. He also has the ability to slow down and stun his opponents through his skill-set. Inability to utilize the complete potential of this hero can result in a fatal blow to the entire team. This can be the only negative point of Tidehunter.
Gush: Summons a gush of water to damage an enemy unit, reducing their movement speed and armour. This ability lasts for 4 seconds and deals considerable amount of damage.
Kraken Shell: Creates a thick armour shell that reduces physical damage and removes negative buffs when damage received reaches a critical threshold. This makes leviathan aggressive.
Anchor Smash: Tidehunter swings his mighty anchor to damage nearby enemies and reduce their base attack damage. The opponents have a hard time to cope with such skill.
Ravage: Tidehunter slams the ground which causes tentacles to erupt in all directions. This ultimate deals a hefty amount of damage and stuns the enemy for a short duration. One of the best ultimates in ganks. One should also note Tide's knack for Kunkka due to their deep rivalry along with his epic quotes.
Coming second in our pick-list is Sven aka The Rogue Knight. The vigil knight is one of the widely used hero in pub games. Embursed with heavy damaging skills such as AOE stun, enhanced armour and movement speed skill along with 'God strength' proves to be like an icing on a cake. Symbolizing strength in a true fashion, Sven plays an effective role in dealing damage to his enemies by the comination of his various skills such as stun, cleave damage along with warcry and his ultimate. His presence in team-fights is crucial since it can be game changing. The role of a support, ganker, semi-carry/carry; he can play all that contributes to the brighter side of this character. Easy to master as well as difficult may contribute to the less advantageous side.
Storm Hammer: Sven unleashes his magical gauntlet that deals damage and stuns enemy units. The stun deals AOE damage and is effective. Easy skill to use and initiate.
Great Cleave: Sven strikes with great force, cleaving all nearby enemyunits with his attack. It penetrates through enemies dealing the extra damage and is a passive skill.
Warcry: Sven's Warcry heartens his allies for battle, increasing their movement speed and armor. Lasts 8 seconds. Proves to be useful in team fights and can be used slightly as escape mechanism as well.
God's Strength: Sven channels his rogue strength, granting bonus damage for 25 seconds. Vehemently deals a lot of damage and can be exponential in every criteria.
The bastard son of the Vigil Knight with his rogue abilities is an easy choice for our new friends.
Known as the essence of vengeance, Vengeful Spirit portrays herself as one of the apt choices for beginners. One of the best support/ganker ever due to her versatility and disabling skills, she works as a charm for the ally team and as a nightmare to the opponents. An imperishable form of spirit energy, driven by vengeance and capable of dealing great damage to the opponents, she charges towards her enemies with a thirst of revenge. Combining her stun, armour reducing, commanding and swapping abilities, she is confident of taking out atleast one hero in any team fight. The brighter side of this character can be defined as a versatile ganker and damage dealer. However, low health points and movement speed contribute to the darker side.
Magic Missile: Fires a magic missile at an enemy unit, stunning and dealing damage. This is a targeted spell disabling the enemy for a specific amount of time. An essential skill that can prove as a bonus to allies.
Wave of Terror: Vengeful Spirit lets loose a wicked cry, weakening the armor of enemies and giving vision of the path. This skill is very useful as it provides vision through the path of wave and reduces armour making them prone to additional damage.
Vengeance Aura: Vengeful Spirit's presence increases nearby friendly units' physical damage. Increase in ally's damage is beneficial in ganks as it paves way to deal extra damage.
Nether Swap: Instantaneously swaps positions with a target Hero, friend or enemy. Used as an escape and chase mechanism, Vengeful Spirit can swap positions due to its long range.
A simple pick for any new player, once mastered, can prove useful in any team.
Lich is our fourth pick. The frost-mage Ethreain is a Dire intelligence hero loaded heavy nukes early game as well as late. Arguably, the strongest intelligence hero in DOTA 2, Lich can be a devastating enemy and a useful ally. Mostly played as a support, he is useful in every way for his team.
Composition of some deadly abilities that can render his opponents helpless, Lich can outwit any hero through his damaging and sacrificing skills. A combination of frost blast along with chain frost can work various wonders. Ice armour is another ability that provides himself and his allies with extra armour which gives them a higher chance of survivability. Also he can deny experience to his opponents by sacrificing/consuming one of his own creeps. Heavy nuker, great supporter and an ardent ganker makes Lich as a viable pick. It can be played in a flamboyant yet easy fashion and is very useful in team fights if utilized properly.
Frost Blast: Blasts the target enemy unit with damaging frost, dealing area damage and slowing movement and attack rates for 4 seconds. The primary target takes the most damage.
Ice Armor: Creates a shield around the target friendly unit, which adds armor and slows attacking melee units. Provides them with an increased chance of survivability. Last 40 seconds.
Sacrifice: Sacrifices a friendly creep and converts its current HP into mana for Lich. This ability derives the opponent of any experience points thus denying them the much needed level up.
Chain Frost: Releases an orb of frost that bounces up to 7 times, slowing and damaging enemy units. The first target is mini-stunned. This can result in the wipe out of an entire team.
Lich deals in magical damage, thus is very efficient in early game as compared to late game.
