Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, which was EA's Play4Free take on a battle arena style game, will shut down at the end of March. The game never quite seemed to take off, even though it did have a dedicated player base.
The game will shut down on March 29th after being "[unable to] meet its financial goals to be sustained", according to a shutdown FAQ for the game. Players will not receive refunds on gem purchases, but the team did announce that remaining in-progress heroes will be released over the next month and can be purchased.
Tim Chappell, the game's producer, put the game's end as a bittersweet experience in his statement:
"Launched in Beta just over a year ago, the free-to-play battle arena version of Warhammer Online was a grand experiment. We were able to test new server technology, learn more about the free-to-play market, and engage in endless quick, down and dirty, three-way battles any time of day or night. On all of these fronts, we were able to make great inroads and insights and deliver a fast and frenetic game.
Tactical arena games and MOBAs are crowding in, and unfortunately, only some can survive in the market.
